The Taupo SPCA is a volunteer run organisation that provides help to animals and people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We promote life-long adoptions, responsible pet ownership and aim to educate the Taupo public on animal welfare issues. Our volunteer inspector investigates and handles complaints of animal cruelty and neglect, and our Animal Centre provides a safe-haven for unwanted, abandoned, sick and injured cats and dogs.
Our organisation has over 112 volunteers and the Animal Centre handles over 700 animals per year, and we endeavour to re-home as many cats, kittens, puppies, dogs and rabbits as possible.
The SPCA is the one organisation that encompasses the needs of all animals.
Despite the fact that we serve an important role in the community, we do not receive any funding from the government, nor from our National Body, and we do not qualify for assistance from the Lottery Grants. Instead, we rely totally upon the good nature and generosity of the public.
We are proud:
Our History
Formed in 1969, the Society was started by a group of dedicated animal lovers who supported the branch financially and also fostered animals in their own homes - as there was no Animal Centre.
After many years, donated materials and support from Taupo Lions Club built the original cattery. Dogs were still accommodated by the branch’s inspector at that time. In 1980, the Society became a branch of the RNZSPCA and thus, came under the umbrella of the National organisation, although remained financially autonomous.
The present Animal Centre was initially the Dog Pound and the council assisted in refurbishing the building to accommodate cats. Over the years, improvements have been made as money has become available, and now the Animal Centre can house 4 dogs, 8 pups and up to 60 cats / kittens. In the near future the branch is planning to relocate the Animal Centre to new premises and a purpose built facility.
Taupo SPCA is run by a dedicated, professional and passionate team who care about all animals.
